The Impact of Camp

Sleep away camp holds a special place in not just our hearts, but everyone who attends. SCOPE gives children from different socioeconomic backgrounds the opportunity to have the camp experience just like we did. At sleep away camp, children get to step out of their comfort zones and spend time away from home. Carly Elkin who attends Camp Starlight said she gets to “spend 7 weeks away from the craziness at home,” which helps her become more independent and self-reliant. Children that go to sleep away camp also get to make new friends from different places all over the country. Each child learns from one another about their backgrounds, their life at home, their traditions, and where they come from. Chase Miller who attends Camp Mataponi, said that at sleep away camp she “met her best friends from all over the country!” Many other campers stated that they met their best friends who have become like sisters and brothers to them. Olivia Cooper who attends Trails Ends Camps said “at sleep away camp, I learned to become myself. I also learned social skills that will last me a lifetime. The self-growth I experienced at camp ranges from a number of things such as independence and problem-solving.” SCOPE provides the life-changing experience of sleep-away to those who are not able to attend otherwise. Everyone who experiences the camp magic becomes a better person and stays in school using the skills they developed at camp. #sleepawaycamp #whatcampmeanstome #friendsforever #homeawayfromhome #goodtimes #10for2 #happyplace #scope #smiles4scope
